It’s Monday Again.

Monday came round quick this week!!!  Our weather held over the weekend so we were able to eat outside with our friends on Saturday evening!!!  It was a very hot day and was very warm into the evening.

Here is out outside dining table set for the evening.  I put my summer quilt on the bench in case it got cool in the evening.

IMG_1594

The friends who came to dinner are the ones celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary in September and this is the quilt I made for them.  They loved it.

IMG_1595

We had a lovely evening and we had not seen them in a while so it was great to catch up.

Sunday was another very warm day so DH and I took the opportunity to get the garden tidy again and also continue with the changes we made to the top of the garden.  At least now it is in great shape before we go away on vacation.

The top picture below is where we have put decorative bark down to help protect the plants with moisture, especially in this heat.  We have also put down weed suppressant membrane down as well.

The six pictures above are just the tidying we have been doing and getting it ready before our vacation.

The Buddleia has come into flower and the bees and butterflies are just loving it.  Above is a Peacock Butterfly.

The above, sorry it is blurred, is a Comma Butterfly.

Treacle spent all day outside on Saturday and yesterday too and was so tired last night she was fast asleep by 7.00pm.

IMG_1605

This was a couple of hours ago where I caught her asleep sitting up (!)  I don’t think she has recovered from the weekend!!!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and ready for a great week ahead.

Friday Book Club for July.

Welcome to my Friday Book Club for July and this is a little bit of a throwback too.

We had the good fortune for our Boys to be young when the Harry Potter Book Series began to be published, the first in 1997.  The film of the first book was released in 2001 when Eldest was six and I took him to see the movie, he absolutely loved it and so we then bought all the books as they were published and I read them to him.  Youngest when he was old enough to also see the film wanted me to read the books to him too, so I got to go through the books twice and of course we saw all the films at the cinema as soon as they were released.  Youngest always used to call Harry “Har Potter” when he was little!!!!!

The reason I have chosen these books for Friday Book Club is because they are so well written that adults can read them, J.K. Rowling did an amazing job of writing them for children but not writing down to children.  This means that adults can read and enjoy them.

81UBlQVxuPL

When I was little we had the Narnia Series of books written by C.S Lewis and again they were written for children but adults can read and enjoy them.  Of course the films of these books were not made until recently and I have to say I enjoyed the books more than the films in this case.

I have been watching the Harry Potter films again whilst I have been doing my ironing and as they are so long, because they did not miss that much of the story from the books, I get a lot of ironing done to them!!!

Both the Boys have the Harry Potter set so I think I am going to borrow one of theirs and take them away with me on holiday and read them again.  Who doesn’t like to escape into another World made of magic, even if there is an evil in it, because it is eventually defeated and that is how our World works.

DSC01967

Here they are in the Great Hall.  By the look on their faces you would think we had told them that they had to stay at school!!!!!!

As you know we took the Boys to Harry Potter World when it first opened to see the sets and where the films were made and it was a great visit and again if you have chance, it is well worth a visit.

A brilliant and very accurate quote from J.K. Rowling at the end of the visit.

Eldest will deny it now but when he was eleven he wanted to be Harry and he copied Harry’s look and the sort of bag that Harry carried at school and the way he dressed.  Here is a picture of him from 2007;

Here is Eldest, on Bonfirm Night, on the right in that jacket with the sparkler pretending to cast a spell.

harry potter prisoner of azkaban

As you can see from this still of the Film The Prisoner of Azkaban Harry has the same jacket on!!!!

I will say that I am so glad that our Boys wanted to emulate a book character rather than some “stars” today who seem to make money out of nothing!!!!!

The Harry Potter Books can be found in every form from Amazon and if you like fantasy books they really are worth reading.  Of course if you like something which is a little less magic but more about relationships and family then give the Narnia series a go, again who doesn’t want to walk through the wardrobe to a new realm where it is always winter and almost Christmas!!

I hope you all have a wonderful Weekend and Happy Reading.

#TBT.

For #TBT today and because Wimbledon is currently on, I thought I would throwback to the 1970’s and a children’s TV programme created from the books of Elisabeth Berresford from 1968.

The Wombles of Wimbledon Common.

_69520045_womble2

The Wombles are pointy nosed little creatures who live under Wimbledon Common and keep the area clean and tidy of rubbish which they collect and then re-cycle.  As you can imagine this was way ahead of its time.  The above picture is from the BBC who created the series for Children’s TV in 1973.  The Wombles motto was “Make Good Use of Bad Rubbish”.  I used to watch them as a little girl and loved them!

The Wombles names were; Great Uncle Bulgaria, Madam Cholet, Tobermory, Orinoco, Bungo, Tomsk, Wellington & Miss. Adelaide.

It was Ladies’ Semi-Finals day today and both were a bit of a white wash with Angelique Kerber and Serena Williams crushing their opponents to reach the final on Saturday.  Tomorrow it is the turn of the Men; Kevin Anderson against John Isner and Novak Djokovic against Rafael Nadal.  I think these matches will be longer possible even into five sets and I would hate to call who will win on either match.

I have errands to run tomorrow and grocery shopping but am going to get everything done very early so I can be back in time to watch the matches!!!

I will also be getting things ready for our friends who are coming to dinner on Saturday.  We have not seen them for a while and this is the couple whose Golden Wedding Anniversary is in September and I have made the quilt for.  We will be giving them the quilt on Saturday and I will show you pictures after then.

Today has been sunny and warm again but they have forecast that we may get thunderstorms tomorrow.  I am hoping that is all we get and Saturday will be lovely again so we are able to eat in the garden.  However, knowing my luck, Saturday will be bad too and then Sunday will be lovely!!!!! Hey ho.

Happy Thursday everyone.

Terrific Tuesday & Wednesday Wag.

royal-air-force-raf-100-years-anniversary-5-x3-flag-62337-p

Yesterday The Queen and the Country celebrated 100 years of the Royal Air Force, which is close to my heart as my father served in the Air Force during WWII.  There was a Memorial Service at Westminster Abbey in the morning with several members of the Royal Family attending, followed by the presentation of New Colour to the Air Force by the Queen in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace, followed by the biggest flypast ever.

Watching the whole event made me very proud to be British and to have the connection with the RAF.

Today DH and I went to see a show case of the work done by Youngest this year, his final year at college before he goes off to Uni or something else!!!!!  We not only saw his work but work by the other students and it was all very good and of a high quality.  I am sure they will all do well with their final marks.

Today, of course, is Wednesday Wag but Treacle was in all day on her own as we were out but probably a good thing for her as it has been very warm today.

Still watching the wonderful tennis matches but so sorry to see Roger Federer go out but great for Kevin Anderson to be in the semi-finals.  It really has been an open Open this year with lots of different names coming to the fore.

Tomorrow is house jobs day and I am also going to go to the gym for the first time in over a year and as you know it is never that day or the next when you feel it, it is the day after that so probably by Saturday I won’t be able to move, tee hee!!!

I hope you are having a wonderful Wednesday!

Monday, zzzzzz.

red-panda-3507877_1920

This is how I felt this morning!!  Last week was very busy and so was the weekend but I think it is the heat taking it out of me.  Yesterday was the hottest it has been so far and by the time we went to bed at 9.30pm last night it was still so hot that no one got much sleep including Treacle.

I got the two quilts finished and the bindings sewn on so just have to sew them to the back now and then wash and dry them and they will be good to go.

DSC05215

DH had a lovely day yesterday being one of the 1% schmoozing at the British Grand Prix in hospitality.  They arrived at 8.00am for breakfast, then they had lunch before the Grand Prix started at 2.00pm and had afternoon tea after the race!!! Alright for some!!! Just a shame Lewis Hamilton didn’t win to make the day complete but he did an excellent job going from last to second, so well done Lewis.

Been working all day today but did have to pop out for an hour at 3.00pm and although it has not been as sunny today it was still hot.  I think we could do with some rain now!!  The British are never happy with the weather!!!!

Although it is four weeks still to our vacation I am starting to get things ready, washing done and gathering things together, can’t wait!!!!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and are going to have a terrific week. I have a busy work day tomorrow and again have to run an errand, Wednesday DH and I are going to see a showcase of Youngest’s work at his college along with his other classmates and then we are taking him for lunch.  Thursday will be house jobs and Friday I will be doing the grocery shopping as we have friends coming for dinner on Saturday evening.  I am hoping that the good weather stays until then so we can eat outside but of course you realise now that having said that it will jinx the weather and it will rain!!!!!  Whatever, I will take pictures to show you all.  Sunday we are at home so will be getting the gardening done again and try to keep on top of it before we go away.

Happy Monday everyone.

Welcome.

hyacinth-787758_1920

Today I have reached 155 Followers and I want to say Welcome to my World to my newest Followers.

thank-you-944086_1920

Thank you too for following me and being interested in my crazy life!!!  I love meeting new people through my Blog from all around the World, what a great way to connect with people.

Writing my Blog to me is like the journals we all used to keep as girls, but we are able to add pictures and illustrations to this more easily.  I also love reading other people’s Blogs and learning about their lives, especially quilting.

Today we are in for our hottest day in Derbyshire at 83°F.  Treacle is out in the garden at the moment but I suspect she will be in soon and I am heading to my quilting room.  It has had the early morning sunshine but the sun will soon move round to the back of the house and hopefully my room will cool down a little bit.  I have switched off every electrical appliance I can to make it as cool as possible.

I hope, whatever you are up to today, you have a wonderful day and if you are coping with extreme heat, stay cool and calm.

Piggy Bank Savings Opening!

p.txt

You know how we all say “where has a year gone?” well it is a year since we started saving in our Piggy Banks for Quilting Challenge run by Val at Val’s Quilting Studio and today is the day we open them and see how we have done.  Now some are just saving their small change, which our family do in an old sweet jar, for a family outing so I had to save money separately for this and I just put in the odd £1 coin every week and if I had five of them I saved those too.  So I opened my Piggy Bank today.

IMG_0622

It is actually a piggy bank as well which belonged to my Grandmother who used to save 20 pence pieces in it.  Mr Piggy has done well.

IMG_1567

As you can see I have counted it out (I changed the coins into notes as it was getting too full with the coins) and it makes £150 which at today’s rate is $198.50.  I am really pleased with the amount and I intend to get some material from the Quilt Shop with it.  Eldest and Girlfriend have been together for seven years this year and I think will eventually get married so I have decided to spend this money on the material for their wedding quilt!  I have a very good friend who has said she will quilt it for me so almost all the ducks are in a row!!!!  I will show you the material when I have bought it.  It will be a double or king size quilt, not too sure yet.

Talking about our notes they have been changing them over the last year from paper to this plastic type of note which is supposed to last longer.  In the picture the £20 are still paper but the £10 and £5 are the new plastic and they feel dreadful.  They also don’t sit very well in your wallets/purses and they do fold over but then don’t straighten out again.  They are also smaller than the old notes.  They always used to say if the currency gets smaller it is being de-valued, I don’t know how true this is but they are definitely smaller.

If Val decides to carry on with the challenge for another year then I am in as I think it has been a great way to save some money for those all important trips to the Quilt Shop!!!!

IMG_1568

Every time I pick my camera up to take a picture Treacle appears and stands there waiting for her picture to be taken!!!  I think she now thinks that this is what she has to do every day as I have taken so many pictures of her for the blog!!!!!  She is a silly goose at times but I don’t mind.  So here is today’s picture!!!  I think you can tell how sunny it is again today with the sun behind her. Today the top temperature is 80°F and the weekend is the same.

I hope whatever you are up to you have a wonderful weekend.  I am going to be in my sewing room quilting.

Summer, it’s great.

We are having a lovely summer, even if the temperatures are up there.  Here are a few pictures from the last few days.

IMG_1554

Treacle yesterday afternoon lying in the shade under the tree which is in the middle of our lawn.

IMG_1559

I was taking a picture of Youngest dressed in his suit for the Sixth Form Ball but I am not allowed to put it on the Blog 🙁  Treacle was most upset I was not taking a picture of her so she stood in front of me until I took her picture!!!

DSC_0552

She has spent three hours at her Spa this morning and this is what she looks like now.

DSC_0551

I got them to go very short on her legs and beard because it is so hot and I really don’t care about the Airedale cut in this weather for her, it’s what is most comfortable for her and as we know her fur will always grow again.  She looks so much happier now outside.  I just love her ears, they always remind me of a bat (I don’t know why!!!!)

Here is a collection of our flowers which we are managing to keep alive at the moment watering them at night when the sun has gone down.

IMG_1535

I just cannot believe how blue the sky is at the moment with not a cloud in the sky.  When I was driving to fetch Treacle from the Spa is was 83°F in the car, fortunately Treacle was not in the car too long and I had the air conditioning going full blast.  A friend the other day said that she went out in her car and drove around no where in particular just so she could be in the cool air of her car!!!

IMG_1538

Fortunately this bit of our patio is cool even with the sun out as we have the big table umbrella up.

IMG_1547

It’s not a very clear picture but I caught this bee on the lavender being very busy, it is a Red-tailed Bumblebee.  They are so cute.

House jobs to do today and tonight is Wild, Wet & Wacky where the teenagers get to compete at different games on the park in teams and it includes a lot of water, foam and general silliness.  I don’t like the event as one year I was down there this boy broke his leg and I heard it go so the whole thing freaks me out!!  DH is down there compering again and playing music while the games are on!!!  Youngest is out at the Sixth Form Ball with his Girlfriend.  Tomorrow it is set up day for the park for Saturday and in the evening DH is commentating on a new event for Carnival, Little Eaton Cake Off!!!!!

I won’t be going to the Carnival on Saturday as DH is always busy as he is Event Director and Youngest will be busy as he is a Marshal for the day and I don’t think I want to walk around for that length of time.  Although my hip is fine I still get tired and achy after a long day and with the heat, I am going to stay at home and quilt.

The-Ultimate-Guide-to-Getting-Wimbledon-Tickets-660x330

Really enjoying the matches at Wimbledon this year, although a lot of the seeds have been knocked out already.  It is also the British F1 at the weekend so another busy sporting weekend and although we are not into football (the boys hated it) there is the England match at 3.00pm.  We think this may have an impact on visitors to Carnival and the last time it happened the park emptied as everyone left to go home and watch the match, although it did mean that we got cleared up early!!!  There is always a positive to these things!!!!!

I hope you are having a Terrific Thursday.

Tuesday Quilt Story.

IMG_1540

There is a story about this quilt which I have named “My Summer Quilt”.  It started off as two Moda Charm packs as I needed something bright on my table for my stall which I had a couple of year’s ago at the Carnival.

IMG_0043.JPG

So when it was on the stall it was not quilted or finished and I was just going to add a border and leave it at that but DH said I should add some more squares to it and make it into a full size quilt.

IMG_1542

Here it is.  I love the colours and normally I wouldn’t go for colours like this but I think it looks great for summer.  Here it is on our bench.

IMG_1541

IMG_1544

Here is the back which is done in pale and a bit darker pink.

IMG_1543

IMG_1539

As the weather is wonderful again I was able to take the pictures outside for a change rather than indoors.

This is the quilt I am going to use with Treacle on it for the “Pets On Quilts” Show in August, but am not taking the picture until after she has been to her spa on Thursday.  At the moment as she is spending all day and all evening outside, her coat looks very untidy with bits of leaves and grass in it!!!!  I keep getting them out of her coat but by the time she comes in again she looks as bad!!!!  Roll on Thursday and she will be cool and de-fluffed!!!

I hope you are having a Thrilling Tuesday.
