Yesterday was Book Club Friday and it reminded me of how my parents and I would go to our local Library every Saturday afternoon and get our books for the week. We had books at home which we owned and I always had books for my Birthdays and Christmas but when I was growing up if you wanted to read a lot being a member of the local library was the best way. (Unfortunately I cannot show you a picture of the Library as all the pictures have copyright on them!!!!).
Above is the old style of reader’s library ticket which you had and when you wanted to check a book out they would take the slip out of the book and put it into your ticket and then stamp the book with the return date. They had really large metal date stamps which made a huge clunk!!!!!!
When you borrowed books from the children’s library you could only check out four books, which by the time I was eight was just not enough!!!! You had to be ten to borrow books from the main library and I could not wait! We also had a library at my school and was ten when I read “The Hobbit” by JRR Tolkien which got me into fantasy books! In fact there was a larger school library at my senior school and spent most lunchtimes in there.
When I did eventually get into the main library I devoured all of the Agatha Christie books but you will not be surprised after yesterday’s post!! I also read a lot of historical fiction and as I got older the romantic novels. However over the years I now tend to read more mystery novels, crime thrillers but still love historical fiction.
When I was in Primary School I had a very good friend, Judith, she and I used to swap books. Our favourites were the Boarding School books:
When I was eight for my Birthday I had the Narnia Set, below, which at the time was quite expensive, however the books themselves to buy individually were only 20 pence!!!
I still think books are one of the best buys in this day and age and although they now cost for a large paperback between £6.99 and £8.99, it really is only the cost of two large fancy coffees!!!!
I do have to admit now though that if I want a book I do tend to buy it rather than go to the Library and borrow it. I am in the fortunate position to be able to do that and also our local libraries have reduced the amount of books they have to borrow and also have reduced the amount of genres!
This is my local bookstore which is a chain in the UK, Waterstones, which do stock a lot of books. Of course I use Amazon as well but I do try and support independent book stores when I can.
This is the new Library near to us, which opened in August this year. I have not had chance to go and have a look yet but am hoping to soon. I may even join!
Going to the library with my parents was the highlight of my week, especially at this time of year with the weather being often bad we would spend a lot of our leisure time reading.
Have a wonderful weekend and I hope you get to spend some time with a good book.
Here are the December Books for my Book Club and yes we have a few not just one! Some I have read and some are on my “To Read” Shelf, which has had to move for Christmas!!!! In fact I am hoping to get quite a bit of reading done over the Christmas holidays.
As you might know, if you follow me, that at this time of year I love to read Christmas books so collect them up and keep them for now! The book below is what I am currently reading:
I came across Edward Marston earlier in the year and loved the book I read, “Fear on the Phantom Special”. I did not review it for Book Club but the books are set in the 1860’s and finds Inspector Colbeck and Sergeant Leeming from Scotland Yard investigating mysteries involved with the private railways up and down the United Kingdom.
In A “Christmas Railway Mystery” one of the engineers disappears after a night out at the local pub only for his body to be found the next day in an alley next to the rolling mill minus his head. The Inspector and Sergeant had to Swindon with only ten days before Christmas Day in the hope they can solve the murder and be back to their homes in time for Christmas.
The following Books are on my “To Read” shelf but I am hoping to get through them this Christmas.
The above book is all about everything Christmas in New York including the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Centre, Christmas lights in Brooklyn and Holiday train all beautifully illustrated with Michael Storrings’ watercolours.
50 Recipes and stories from New York at Christmas is the above book.
When we visited Dicken’s Museum in London in October I bought this lovely little copy of “A Christmas Carol”. This book, like Jane Austen’s “Pride & Prejudice” I read every year. I am never certain that Ebenezer will discover his Christmas spirit in time!!!!
Now you all know, again if you follow me, that I love mystery stories especially the old fashioned everyone gathering at a big country house for Christmas, a large family and friends and they all settle in for the long Christmas holiday. Except by day two someone has murdered one of the guests and then the local Inspector arrives to solve the mystery!
As you can imagine there are an awful lot of these books out there and I just love them. The British Library (which DH and I also went to whilst we were in London) have re-published some out of print classic books and the above one is one of them.
The horror on the train, great though it may turn out to be, will not compare with the horror that exists here, in this house.’ On Christmas Eve, heavy snowfall brings a train to a halt near the village of Hemmersby. Several passengers take shelter in a deserted country house, where the fire has been lit and the table laid for tea – but no one is at home. Trapped together for Christmas, the passengers are seeking to unravel the secrets of the empty house when a murderer strikes in their midst.
Georgette Heyer is not as well known as her contemporaries Agatha Cristie and Dorothy L. Sayers but is a great writer in the same format.
The above book finds that It is no ordinary Christmas at Lexham Manor. Six holiday guests find themselves the suspects in a murder inquiry when the old Scrooge who owns the substantial estate is found stabbed in the back. Whilst the delicate matter of inheritance could be the key to this crime, the real conundrum is how any of the suspects could have entered the locked room where the victim was found, to commit this foul deed. For Inspector Hemingway of Scotland Yard, the investigation is also complicated by the fact that every guest at Lexham Manor is hiding something – casting suspicion far and wide
This is the first novel of Ada Moncrieff and in the style of the greats.
Christmas Eve, 1938. The Westbury family and assorted friends have gathered for another legendary celebration at their beautiful country house. The champagne flows, the silverware sparkles and upstairs the rooms are ready for their occupants. But one bed will lie empty that night. On Christmas morning, David Campbell-Scott is found dead in the snow. There’s a pistol beside him and only one set of footprints. Yet something doesn’t seem right to amateur sleuth Hugh Gaveston. Campbell-Scott had just returned from overseas with untold wealth – why would he kill himself? Hugh sets out to investigate…
And finally the Queen of Mystery Writers, Mrs Christie, and a compendium of Chritmas stories with your favourite characters, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple and other short stories.
Hopefully you will find something here in the December Book Club to keep you busy and entertained in the dark nights and Christmas holidays.
There is a lot going off at home at the moment. I have had all of them at home for lots of days and it has been wonderful. There are lots and lots of parcels arriving at the door. When the doorbell goes I am in a race with Mom to see who can get to the door first, it’s usually me!!! I have a new quilt in my basket and I love it. It is so comfy.
My besstie, Molly, has a new header on her blog and we got the picture. Just look at all that lovely snow, the red tennis balls and the wonderful Christmas scene. Mom just loves the picture. They are forecast to have snow this weekend and I will be so jealous!
Molly is wearing her Santa hat and here is a picture of me, a little blurry sorry, with my Santa hat and my tennis ball. Mom needs to find my hat so I am ready for Santa Paws!
Girlfriend has been visiting Penny and here are some more pictures. I would love to go and meet her but doggies are not allowed at the stables unfortunately.
All of the Christmas decorations have come out at home and Mom has been busy baking and I have been helping!!! I do get to try one of all the goodies!
I can’t wait for Christmas, I love opening presents and having all my family at home!!!
So having tidied up after they all left for work this morning, I can now show you our tree for this year!
Its a lovely tree this year very full. We always get it from the garden centre in our village where by best friend, Jayne, her son works there.
We have moved the sitting room furniture around a little bit and my rocking chair is now in front of the tree.
As you can see the sofas have moved a little bit.
My Mom’s Santa Claus from her tree when she was a little girl so this is now over eighty years old, so is always packed away very carefully!
This is my Fortunum & Mason teapot ornament I got last year.
This ornament is hand painted glass and DH and I bought it when we went to Vienna for our 15th Wedding Anniversary in November 2003.
My Christmas Quilt I made last year.
The bookcases with the Christmas lights on. I love these.
The other bookcases and the drinks table which has also been moved for Christmas!
These are the little felt mice I bought last year. I just think they are so cute.
This is our fireplace. I had some spare lights and put them in the big lantern by the fire.
Our lights on the stairs which we do every year.
My Dining Room Dresser dressed for Christmas! Say that phrase a few times!!!!!
Our door into the garden.
A new buy from last year which the Christmas napkins are stored in.
This is our garden today, its raining again!
This is what happens when your 21 and 25 year old are at home isolating!!! They got the train board out and re-did all the track and got all the trains out! Girlfriend helped.
As you may be able to see, it is sat on top of my dining table! I have told them that it can stay out until Christmas Eve when it will need to be moved! That means it will probably end up in our bedroom! However it is lovely to see the trains running again.
This is how the board used to look when they were small.
December 16th
On December 16th 1773 American rebels dressed as Indians and threw 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbour thus paving the way for the American Revolution.
Famous people born on this day were Ludwig van Beethoven, Jane Austen and ZZ Top star Billy Gibbons who is 66 today!
Happy Wednesday everyone! Treacle will be here tomorrow with The Wednesday Wag! I know it is all upside down at the moment 🙂
We have all been released from self-isolation with none of us having the classic symptoms of Covid!!! Go figure! The children are all glad to be back at work and DH and I managed to work all the way through because we work from home anyway, well I do! DH is normally out and about so it was quite unusual to have him at home! Treacle of course was in seventh heaven with all of us here. Captive audience so to speak!
After Treacle had been to the Spa I washed all her beds, towels etc and whilst they were in the washer I put her inner quilt in her basket and she managed to sink into it and looked so comfy. Anyway we decided not to put her original cover back on and I bought a normal cotton quilt cover and folded it like I did before. Anyway she absolutely loves it and is so snuggled in it!!! As you can see above and below!!!
Girlfriend went to see Penny after our self-isolation and here she is “smiling”! She was so pleased to see Girlfriend after ten days but the stables where she is look after her really well!
I didn’t blog all of last week despite being at home because we were really busy with work. A lot of customers have decided to move orders up in case there is another Lockdown in January! Sorry!
I did get some of the baking done. The Christmas puddings above.
The Christmas Cake above, baked and waiting to be “fed” before marzipan and icing!
Mince pies waiting to go in the oven.
Mince pies out of the oven and cooling.
The welcome sign in our hallway.
A throwback picture to last Christmas and the Library at Chatsworth. No one is of course able to go this year because of this wretched Covid!
I will get some more pictures of our home when I have tidied up this evening! You can imagine what it looks like after I have had the Boys at home for ten days!!!!
I have also not forgotten that Friday should have been Book Club Day and I have a few Books for you, so I will do that for this Friday, just a week late but in this year who cares?!!!!
I hope you lovely lot are going to have a great week and all you plans for this different Christmas are going well.
Yep it has finally happened, one of us has tested positive for Covid! So we are all now self isolating for fourteen days!!!! I suppose we have done pretty well to get to this point in the year and have not had an incident of it before!!! Therefore we are starting Christmas now!!!!
We decorated our home yesterday for Christmas and I will get some pictures of that for tomorrow.
One person who is really happy we are all at home is Treacle. She got up this morning and it was like yeah you are all here!!!!
Anyway we are all fine, no symptons of the dreaded Covid just the cold that we have all had! At least I will have no excuse not to blog over the next two weeks!
We got to the end of the week relatively in tact! Today we have had lots of heavy rain with snow mixed in but not enough to settle.
He is always joking around!
All waiting for the presents to be opened!
Treacle waiting to help with the opening!
Treacle has been to the Spa today and looks and smells so much better. Her Ladies were all decked out for Christmas when we got there and it was lovely and warm in the cutting area, as it is really cold and wet today. I did wonder whether I needed to take Treacle’s coat with me to put on her afterwards as it was so horrible! Although my Jeep was nice and warm for her on the way home.
Treacle has had her Christmas bath and haircut and looks and smells so much better! Daddy’s home!
Although she has spent the afternoon since we got back in her basket, it is so tiring going to the Spa!
Daddy you may hold my paw now you are home! Just need my dinner and I will be fine!
We are getting the Christmas tree tonight and will decoarate it and our home on Sunday when everyone is in. Tomorrow I have a few home jobs to do and also get out all the winter jumpers which I have not done yet and definitely need if the weather is going to continue like this!!!!
I hope you lovely lot have a wonderful Weekend whatever you are up to.

Hugs & Big Love from Mom, Dad, Eldest, Girlfriend & Treacle xxxxx
Happy December Everyone and the countdown to Christmas has really begun! I opened the first door on my Advent calendar this morning to find a present there! It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!!!!!
Girlfriend and I got Youngest’s cake done last night. I made the cake and rolled out the icing and made the wheels and Girlfriend did the icing on the cake. It took quite a while but it looks good. I will show you pictures tomorrow.
Still have quite a bit to do but I am splitting it down to each day rather than trying to get it all done at once. Still not feeling too hot so am trying to pace myself! Today it has been sunny for a while which has been so nice as we have not seen the sun for quite a lot of days now. That of course means that it is very cold but I don’t mind that. I am hoping that the cold will kill off my cold!
One benefit of not feeling too good is that I am getting to watch quite a few Christmas Hallmark Movies whilst I am doing things around out home!!! I just love them. They are all the same story really but I love the Christmas scenes and the snow!!! One year DH and I will visit the US over Christmas and go visit one of these small towns where it is a cosy, snowy Christmas!!!!!!
Happy December 1st you lovely Lot.
Hugs & Love, Susie xx
