Monthly Friday Book Club.

614NcZtv1VL

Hi All and welcome to Monthly Friday Book Club, just a week late due to my not being very well!

This book has been out for a while and can be found on Amazon in hardback/paperback/Kindle versions.  The reason I chose this book was because one of the Mitford Girls was Deborah Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, whose home is Chatsworth House here in Derbyshire.

Deborah Freeman-Mitford was the youngest of six sisters and one brother and was born in 1920 to David, 2nd Baron Redesdale of Asthall Manor, Oxfordshire and his wife Sydney.  Her sisters were Nancy, Pamela, Diana, Unity & Jessica and brother Thomas.  She married the 11th Duke of Devonshire, Andrew Cavendish, in 1941 and they have three children living.  She sadly passed away in 2014.  DH and I had the pleasure of meeting her during a private tour of Chatsworth House and she was delightful.

Because of my interest in the Duchess I picked this book up and it is a fascinating look at a family at the height of the Golden Age of country house living in a privileged background where women were not educated but expected to marry wealthy young men.  As the girls grew and the political climate changed with the onset of World War II the sisters divided in their beliefs; Nancy was a moderate socialist, Tom was a fascist and refused to fight Germany but signed up to fight Japan and was killed in action.  Diana married Sir Oswald Mosley leader of the British Union of Fascists and was imprisoned during the War.  Unity was a big supporter of Adolf Hitler and was so distraught about the War tried to commit suicide but failed and died early of her injuries.  Jessica was a communist and because of this she and Diana never spoke again although the other sisters did correspond throughout their lives, despite their political differences.

There were many marriages and divorces between the sisters over the years and controversy followed a lot of them.  Nancy became an Author and a lot of her books are based upon her early life and the people she knew.

Deborah was seen as the most normal of the sisters marrying into the Cavendish family and at the time of her marriage would not become Duchess of Devonshire as her husband, Andrew, was the second son of the 10th Duke.   His brother, William would have inherited the title on his father’s death. William married Kathleen Kennedy, Sister to John F Kennedy,  in 1944 whilst he was serving in the Army during the War but was sadly killed four months later.  Kathleen, too, died the following year in a plane crash without them having any children, which is why Andrew Cavendish became the 11th Duke.

The book is very much a look at an age which is long past but if you enjoy Biographies and recent history then this is a must.  I hope that if you do read it you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Happy Friday everyone.

Hugs, Susie xx

Somwhere Between Martha Stewart & Bad Moms!

Okay I bet you are wondering what I am up to now!!! As the weeks advance through March I seem to be getting an Email an hour regarding Spring Cleaning!  I mean I get over forty emails a day with work and Boys things and swimming and my Blog but it has really ramped up for Spring Cleaning over the last few days.

I am getting emails from the department store I shop at trying to sell me new cleaning appliances, I am getting emails from my supermarket trying to get me to buy every cleaner known to man and of course an email a day from Martha Stewart telling me how I should clean everything we own!!

Now I always, with the help of DH, do our Spring Cleaning and depending upon how strong I feel during the weeks that I do it depends upon how I go about it and this is where the “somewhere between Martha Stewart and Bad Moms” comes in!  Now if you have not seen the film “Bad Moms” I can recommend it, even DH liked it.  It is essentially a tale of three Moms who are trying their hardest to be perfect in every way and then decided that that it is too much and throttle back.  As you can imagine there is chaos but it all comes right in the end.

(Martha Stewart from marthastewart.com website)

Now back to Martha Stewart.  I am sure when she was young and setting out she did do all the things she tells everyone they should be doing, especially with cleaning but as we all know she has a huge staff now who actually do all this work which she directs to be done.  Now we could all get everything done if we had the same help but I bet, like me, you don’t have staff and have to do the work yourself.

So, like my Christmas Planner, I am going to show you my Spring Cleaning Planner over the next few days/weeks and hopefully this will help you to get yours done.  It will show you some of the tips and hints that I have picked up over the years from various places and from my Grandmother, who I always helped with the Spring Cleaning and hopefully by the end of it we will have a lovely clean home without too much stress and effort and somewhere between Martha Stewart and Bad Moms!!!!

It’s being doing this again all day today and really does not make me feel like Spring Cleaning!  In fact it just makes me want to hibernate even more!  I have been working all day today and have another basket of ironing to do and it is House Jobs tomorrow and grocery shopping on Saturday!  DH and Youngest are out at swimming events tomorrow and Saturday evening and during Saturday I am hoping to spend the day quilting because it’s …..

This Saturday National Quilting Day!  So I hope you are all able to get into your sewing space to do some quilting!!!  I am hoping to get quite a bit done which I will hopefully get to show you on Sunday or Monday.

I hope you are all having a Thrilling Thursday.

Hugs, Susie xx

The Wednesday Wag!

Mom says we need to have Spring pictures on the Blog as the weather is not good at home with all the rain!  Here I am in our Garden last year with the daffies coming out and the little violas.

Whilst Mom has been under the weather she has not been reading her favourite Blogs so we missed Miss Molly’s Birthday on March 3rd when she turned six!  We are so sorry we missed it and here is a Birthday cake to make up for it.  We saw you had a lovely day with your Mom.

The benefit of Mom getting over her Op is that she is usually in bed early and I get to snuggle, which is my most important job at the moment.  Because the weather is not so good either I don’t feel as if I am having to split my time.

Also today we have heard the news that Stephen Hawking has passed away at the age of 76.  Mom said that every Generation has a genius which then propels our knowledge forward and Stephen Hawking was our generations Genius!

This was his most famous book, of which you had to be a genius to understand it!  He will be missed.

I hope you are having a Woofy Wednesday wherever you are and the weather is being kind to you.  They have forecast snow for here at the weekend again!!!!! Yeah!

Treacle

I Don’t Want To!

I am starting all the posts this week with a Spring picture, because it certainly isn’t outside and they are forecasting snow again for the weekend here!!!!  Oh Good Grief Charlie Brown!!!!

Anyway I bet you wonder what the title of this post means?  Well do you remember as children you were never allowed to say you didn’t want to do something? Certainly at school you had to do things whether you wanted to or not and a favourite saying of my Grandmother’s was “there is no such word as Can’t” (yes I know there is but she always used to say cannot!!!).  Why I am talking about this is because the new block for the “It’s a Wild Life” Block of the Month has been released and oh boy it is something I always run away from; it’s applique!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is the block from Amy’s blog, Sew Incredibly Crazy, and it was designed by Carla at Creatin’ in the Sticks!!  As you can see it is pieced and appliqued.   Now every time I have tried applique it never looks quite right but I have decided that I am not going to run away from this and have a go at doing it!!!  However I think I am going to cut out two lots of all of it just in case the first one does not go together well!!!  I love the block though, it is really cute hopefully I will do it justice.

I am planning to make a few things for Easter which is coming up fast, especially as it is so early this year, so I will get to show you those soon. I found the above recipe on Moda Bake Shop and will be just right for some of the things I am thinking of as gifts!

I am still slowly working my way through the bindings I am sewing down on my UFO’s but am not in a rush to get those finished and my final project at the moment is to sort out the backing for my summer quilt so that I can get that sandwiched and quilted.

I have also received the material for our friends table runner for their 40th Wedding Anniversary celebrations so need to get on and sort out the blocks for that.  I can see I will be writing a list so that I can keep all this straight!!!

I have a basket of ironing to get done tonight so no quilting today but hopefully tomorrow if I can get through my work quickly I will be able to get some things done then.

I hope you are all having a Thrilling Tuesday.

Hugs, Susie xx

Treacle has been helping all day in the Den, by sleeping!!!

Finally I Am Back!

Well I have finally recovered from the stomach bug last week which took all of last week!!!  It was not pretty!  I have today been catching up with my emails and work which I missed last week and have managed to catch up especially as it is the second week of March already and only two weeks before Easter as it is early this year!!!

I tried to do a bit of sewing yesterday but did not get a lot done as I have been very tired, which is recovering from the Op, and I know that if I start anything when I am tired, I usually make mistakes, so all I got done was a bit of tidying!!!  I think if I want to do anything meaningful I need to go in there first thing in the morning!!

I have also been managing to get my cleaning, washing and ironing done which is great as I hate when it is not done and everything is disorganised!!!

Yesterday was Mother’s Day here in the UK and both Boys were home which was lovely.  This is also a #TBT picture, which I missed last week, to when we were all in Orlando in 2008.  Eldest was twelve and Youngest was eight and I love them to bits!!!

Now last Friday should have been Book Club Friday but I missed it so will be doing that this Friday, just a week late!!!  I have a good book for you too!

I hope everyone is having a Marvelous Monday!

Hugs, Susie xx

Nurse Treacle has been helping all last week, keeping me company and cuddling!

Sorry For The Break!

So despite being two weeks into recovery after my Op I managed to get a stomach bug!!!  So Monday I was sick and DH was not only having to cope with me on crutches he was having to cope with my being ill as well.  He is a Saint. It is going round from what I hear but what makes me laugh is, I haven’t been out anywhere!!!!

I spent all day in bed yesterday just drinking water and nothing else and have today got up and although I was not supposed to I had a bath!!!  For the first six weeks after a hip Op you are not supposed to go beyond 90° in case you dislocate it.  Our bath is a corner bath which is quite deep and high sides so technically I can’t climb in but before my Op I had perfected a way of getting in and out wihout climbing, so did that today and got in without any problems and had a long, hot bath and felt so much more like me when I got out!!!  I am now adding food very carefully to make sure I don’t relapse as it is the worse thing to me being sick!!!!

Cuddle monkey has been keeping me company on the bed and I have been watching films and falling asleep usually half way through but I have seen then all before!  Anyway I have not been doing anything else so this post is really boring!!!  I didn’t even get into my sewing room at the weekend because of one thing and another so hopefully I will be able to get in there this weekend!!

It’s Mother’s Day here in the UK on Sunday and last year My Boys, Girlfriend & DH took me for breakfast on the Saturday morning at our local Farm Shop which was a wonderful idea and I loved more than flowers etc.  I don’t think I will be doing that this year because of my hip but hey ho.

All our snow has gone and it has warmed up a little but is still cold at night and for some parts of the UK they have forecast more snow!!  Which is getting a little silly now on March 7th!  We should have Spring flowers blooming and birds nesting but we all seem to be in Winter mode and still hibernating!

I hope everyone is fairing better and having a Wonderful Wednesday! Treacle will be back next week with her Wednesday Wag, she has not been doing a lot either!!!!

Spring, Well Maybe!

She turned to the sunlight And shook her yellow head, And whispered to her neighbour: “Winter is dead.” ― A.A. Milne

Well it would be nice to think so but as we have about a foot of snow on the ground and even my snowdrops are looking sorry for themselves I don’t think we can say that Spring is here just yet!

I love the above quote from one of all of our family’s favourite authors A.A. Milne he of the Winnie the Pooh stories.  I read all the stories to both of the Boys when they were little and we got lost in the Hundred Acre Wood lots of times.  They are truly magical stories.

However we can look forward to the better weather and in fact the temperature next week, one week on from the -6°C, is going to be 10°C, possitively balmy!!!!  Roll on Spring.

Friday is Here!

Well Friday is here and at the moment we still have snow.  The rest of the World of course are laughing at us as; a little bit of snow and the whole country loses its mind!!!

This picture was in the Daily Mail today (copyright: Storyful) where the snow ploughs are unearthing the road at Trollstigen Pass, Norway.  Now this is snow!!!  I think the reason our country has such a reaction to snow is because we don’t get it often enough, so when we do everything becomes impossible!!!  DH and Eldest are both at work again today but college for Youngest was shut again today and so are the schools, well it is Friday!

Two Weeks Down, Four To Go!!!!!

Normally I would not bother how things are going with my recovery except there is an issue at the beginning of April, after Easter.  The work we do with our German Company their representative is coming over for two days, to visit the customers and, as it is Easter Holidays, he is bringing his wife and daughter.  So DH will be out with him on visits and I am entertaining his wife and daughter.  I have planned a few things, one of which will be a visit to Chatsworth House, which will be open again by then after their Winter closure.  Also his wife is a quilter, which is so lucky, so I have also planned visits to quilt shops in Derbyshire and beyond.  I think he will regret bringing his wife with him!!!  At least they are driving over so won’t have an issue of getting all the fabric back on the plane!!!!!  I do hope they like what I have planned and this is why I am counting down as I am not able to drive until six weeks after the Op which will be Easter Saturday and four days before they arrive.  I am going to go out with Tom that weekend in my Jeep to make sure I am happy, the saving grace being it is an automatic so I don’t have to keep changing gear.  Of course it will mean that I have to get some fabric too, tee hee.

I have had a few new Followers come along for the ride this week, so Welcome and I hope you enjoy my posts.  I love connecting with new Friends.

Quilt Retreat At Home this weekend for me, so DH and Youngest can get on and do any jobs and they are both out all day Sunday at a swimming competition which is still on at the moment.    I still have a few projects I need to get done and some which are still in the process of getting finished but I am getting there!!!  Still waiting for the fabric I have ordered for our friends’ anniversary present but I can start to do a few things for it from my stash which is what I will start tomorrow.  I also have another new super secret quilt to make and I can plan that which will also be all from my stash too.

Anyway that’s the plans for the weekend at the moment but of course it could all change again.  I hope you all have a terrific weekend.

Hugs, Susie xx

Snow Day!

We are doing The Wednesday Wag on Thursday this week as Mom has saved these pictures!!!! It started to snow yesterday morning quite early but not a lot,  however it continued to gently snow for most of the day and night and this morning it has been snowing a gale and is still snowing now!!!  Thanks to Parr Films for the pictures!  Enjoy!

Treacle’s Snow Day!

I am ready for the Off!

Get Set!  GO!!!!!!!

Snow Ball Catch!

Airedale Snow Race!

Down the Hill To Start Again!

Ready?

GO, GO, GO!

Whee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Up to the Top of the Hill to start again!

The only problem?  Getting her to come in again!!!!!

It’s still snowing but it is due to warm up a little bit so I suspect it will go pretty soon.  Some parts of the UK, especially Scotland, have had a lot of the white stuff.  Our primary school in the village is closed today and I suspect will be closed tomorrow as is the senior school and Youngest’s college in Nottingham.  So Snow Days all round!    DH and Eldest managed to both get to work but I think they would have both liked to stay home.   Of course I can’t go out in it 🙁 but it is very pretty to look at.

So what is a girl to do but make a hot chocolate with plenty of marshmellows!!!

My days swing from being okay and thinking that everything is going well with recovery to feeling dreadful!  I also think I am getting a little stir crazy being at home all the time!!  I don’t know that I will manage six weeks without going out, oh wait I have a dental checkup next week, yeah!!!! Party!!!!  I have been doing my work along with binge watching films, some of which I have seen before and some I haven’t.  It also makes me realise how many films are made each year and how few are actually good!  The DVD’s will be coming out next!

The birds are busy at the feeders today.

I think tomorrow I will definitely spend the day in my sewing room.  It is also warmer in there than the rest of the house.  Although the central heating is on, we control each room by thermostatic radiators which are all turned to their highest setting, it is still cool.  It doesn’t help at the moment that I am not able to wear my staple outfit of everyday when at home of Jeans and Boots!!  The jeans press on the wound too much, which is now undressed, and so I am in jogging bottoms all the time and they are just not as warm and I am wearing my trainers.  I will be so pleased when I can get back into jeans and my boots.

Of course today is March 1st and start of the Spring months but as you can tell we are still definitely in the grip of Winter.  I think Spring has been postponed.

This is coming up fast, so mark your Calendars for March 17th (the third Saturday in March) and hopefully we will all get the chance to play with fabric all day and make things.

Happy Thursday everyone.

Hugs, Susie xx
